My Contribution
By the end of my video game development course, some of the art students approached me with an intriguing proposal. They were about to start a new company and needed an engineer for their first project. The project piqued my interest as it was a mobile game during a time when smartphones were still quite new, and this game aimed to leverage technologies like the touchscreen and accelerometer.
I joined the team as the sole programmer, and together we developed Mortal Balance. The journey was challenging, as mobile phones were very limited back then. We had to explore various approaches to make everything fit on such constrained devices, and aligning our efforts wasn't always easy. Some areas were easier to handle with art support, while others required programmatic solutions. Finding the right balance between these approaches was the most valuable lesson I took from this project.
Unfortunately, some features, like enemy monkeys coming from the ropes, were too demanding for the target devices and had to be dropped. Despite these challenges, the project was a significant learning experience and a testament to our ability to innovate within the constraints of early mobile technology.
